This is a crosspost with <a href=\"http:\/\/phillygirlsonrails.com\/?p=88\">RubyGirlsonRails<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Repository<\/strong> (slang<em>: Repo<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p>Location on <a href=\"http:\/\/github.com\/\">github<\/a> that stores a snapshot of a project. It includes: snapshots of changes and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>commits<\/em> <\/span>in a history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Names of Repos:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Upstream<\/em><\/span> points to the source projects on github. <em><\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Origin<\/em><\/span>\u00c2\u00a0 points to \u00c2\u00a0 the\u00c2\u00a0 forked copy in\u00c2\u00a0github of the source.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Master<\/em><\/span> is the local copy on your development system. So when you work locally, you can merge <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>master<\/em><\/span> with <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>origin\/master<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Public and Private:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Public<\/em><\/span> repos are visible to anyone, including users who are not logged in to github. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Private<\/em><\/span> repos are only available to members of a working team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Workflow:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><strong>Fork<\/strong><\/em> a project on github<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Clone<\/strong><\/em> your github fork to your computer\/local development area (this means you now own two repos: one on github, one on your computer.<\/li>\n<li>Create a topic <em><strong>branch<\/strong><\/em> for your own work in your local clone<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Commit<\/strong><\/em> changes to your github fork<\/li>\n<li>send a <em><strong>pull request<\/strong><\/em> back to the original project<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>About Remotes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In git, other repos that it knows about are called <em>remotes<\/em>. When you clone a repo, git saves the parent repo under the name<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em> origin<\/em><\/span>, so origin on your computer repo will point to your personal fork on github<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(I am posting this mostly to review key concepts discussed on evening of May 29, 2013).
